Observatory is one of Cape Town's best places to people-watch. You’re sure to find unique and interesting people. In this place of artists, hipsters and bohemians, where each thrift shop, bookstore and bar has a distinct personality and every other wall is splashed with street art, it takes a lot to stand out.

One group that stood out to me on the streets of Obz were people wearing clothes made entirely of hessian. I had always thought of Rastafarianism as a distinctly Jamaican concept, so it was really cool to learn that these were Khoi people called Sakmanne who have merged elements of their Indigenous culture with Rastafarianism to create a lifestyle that is unique to them and their context. I enjoyed the chance to learn more about this lifestyle through this project.

Audio Feature

My idea for this project was inspired by oral history, reviving the tradition of recording and passing down culture through storytelling.  I wanted to work in the angle that I’ve always felt a bit disjointed from Coloured culture, so the goal of the project is to form a deeper connection with my heritage and community through hearing other people’s experiences. This episode was about defining Coloured culture, understanding people’s relationship with their identity and exploring the history and origins of the term “Coloured”.

Data Journalism

I wrote and conceptualised a data journalism enterprise story detailing corporate “greenwashing” in relation to gaming company Sony. My group's intention was to expose how the practices of the gaming industry do not align with their supposed sustainability goals. We wanted to promote green gaming as a necessary alternative to young South African gamers, so they can communicate to companies that this is a change they'd like to see. I worked in collaboration with Patsy Mboumba, who designed the website, and Zian Lombat, who created the multimedia elements.

Social Media Campaign

For this assignment, we had to create a social media campaign pack to promote our group’s greenwashing project. I chose to make a Twitter Newsroom Video and an Instagram post.
